Our Family Concert features the wonderful musical tale Peter and the Wolf by Russian 20th century composer, Serge Prokofiev interpreted through dance by the Noble Dance Company. The first half of the concert opens with Prokofiev’s rousing winter sleigh ride movement, Troika, from his Lieutenant Kije music. We then offer Beethoven’s Prometheus Overture dating from 1801 originally part of a larger ballet the composers first work for the stage. The overture begins with a short but dramatic intro following by an angular but lightning quick Allegro molto con brio (possible hints of the Italian Rossini or Mozart?) featuring woodwind arabesques and rapid fire fiddling!
Young trumpet sensation Natalie Dungey will take the stage as soloist for the premiere of Prelude-Toccata-Dance composed by Maestro Zoltek. This piece was written especially for Natalie after Maestro Zoltek experienced her wonderful playing when he invited her to perform during Festival Amadeus 2011. This three movement concerto is set in three movements the first of which, Prelude, sets a tranquil tone with a naïve floating melody representing innocence alternating with a more active complimenting lyrical theme. The second movement, Toccata, is quick energy music with fleeting string figures and rapid trumpet lines. The final dance movement is set up in 10/8 synco-rhythm with strident trumpet calls echoing blues and jazz idioms. When composing this work for Natalie, Maestro Zoltek hoped to capture and express a sense of youthful innocence, play and exuberance while still allowing for a bit of technical concerto flash!
Peter and the Wolf is the very popular children’s musical piece or symphonic fairy tale composed in 1936 by Prokofiev in order to introduce children to the sounds of the instruments in the orchestra. Each character is represented by a particular instrument or section: Peter (strings) Bird (flute) Duck (oboe) Cat (clarinet) Grandfather (bassoon) Wolf (French horns) Hunters (percussion). It was composed in one week with full orchestration two weeks later. Like most of Prokofiev's music Peter and the Wolf features adroit thematic integration and development. Peter's theme, the dominant theme of the work, is stated at the beginning of the piece, and is then combined with other subordinate themes. This thematic blending is also closely tied to the dramatic action, underscoring developments in the story. Harmonically, the piece begins and ends in C major, but contains many sudden harmonic shifts, another important aspect of Prokofiev's style. Peter and the Wolf has long been a classic, loved by children for its vivid storytelling, and by adults for its gentle sense of humor and good-natured tunefulness.
