Description:
Help Build Better Lives—Become a Literacy Volunteer

What would your life be like if you struggled with reading, English or basic skills? When you help someone build their reading, math, life or language skills you help build better lives. Literacy Volunteers of Flathead County provides free, confidential, one-on-one tutoring to adults and families who struggle these basic skills. We need tutors who would like to work with children in our family/early literacy programs. New tutors and volunteers are essential so that we can keep up with the increased demand for our services!

We also have a variety of volunteer opportunities that utilize a wide range of talents (from fundraising to art and book sorting to office work) and don’t require tutor training. This year we will be celebrating our 25th anniversary, so we will also be recruiting for volunteers for an event steering committee for our anniversary event (dinner/book auction) that will take place in May.

Interested tutors and volunteers can attend our Open House at our main office in Kalispell on Wednesday, January 23 from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. at our office at the Gateway Community Center (1201 Hwy 2 West, on the north end of the mall where the Flathead Food Bank is located.) Please call our office to confirm you will be attending. Tour our new space at the Gateway Community Center and learn about all the ways that you can literacy in the Flathead.

Basic Literacy and ESL (English as a Second Language) tutors must attend our tutor training course before they can be assigned a learner; but volunteers can start right away. Our formal training for new tutors is Saturday, January 26, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. New volunteers and tutors are asked to attend the orientation session before they attend Saturday’s training. Please call our office at 257-7323 if you have any questions or need to make other arrangements.
