Viscosity Theatre's Comedy Cabaret series began in October of 2014 when artist Rebecca Schaffer needed an inspirational hijack to boost her creative thought process while directing The King and I at Whitefish Theatre Co. She approached Megan Grunow, owner of Crush Lounge, about producing an irreverent Sketch Comedy Cabaret for the Holiday. Megan said yes: the artists could use the space for free, and take 100% of the ticket sales at the door. "As an artist, space is the number one financial obstacle when making theatre," says Schaffer. "To have a venue offer free space allows us to invest in our most valuable resource for creating relevant, dynamic work: our artists."

The artists who came together to form the Viscosity Cabaret turned out to be the perfect team. Now only one year and a quarter later, the team has written six original cabarets, including over twelve hours of original comedic material, plus an original children's show conceptualized by Schaffer and developed with cabaret member Mikey Winn. They've taken two shows on the road, sustained a summer run with packed audiences every week, and created over $25,000 in jobs for Montana artists. Cabaret members include Schaffer, Winn, David Blair, Collette Taylor, Becky Rygg, Adam Pitman, Don Caverly, Matthew Bussard, and Morgan Hart Delaney.

R.I.P Crush Cabaret marks the last Viscosity Cabaret at Crush Lounge, as Crush will be closing for good on February 16. "We are devastated by Crush's closure; it is our home, and an important place for alternative art and performance and people in the community," says David Blair. "We are definitely going out with a bang (pun intended). In my opinion, this show is going to be our finest and funniest."

Mikey Winn joined the Cabaret after only nine months in the Theatre. He has since become one of the most popular performers in the Valley, achieving professional status through the Cabaret and his debut with Alpine Theatre Project in Big Fish. Winn says, "Cabaret has become a special part of our lives. As a performer, it has been a dream come true to write and perform our own material. If we have a song to sing, we sing it. If we have a joke to tell, we tell it. Because we are all so different, we've created some beautiful, weird material. This show will be a bittersweet full circle experience. We are sad to lose Crush."

Becky Rygg joined the second Cabaret, "Crushentines" after approaching Schaffer, saying "I love what you do." Schaffer had seen her onstage in Noises Off and Two Rooms at WTC and said, "You need to be a part of this." Becky said "I do," and is now a staple in the company. Rygg says, "I saw a group of hilarious, talented, raunchy, loving people on stage, and I knew it was for me. Making people occasionally pee their pants is my favorite thing. Playing with comedy and improv, singing, writing for sold-out shows...it's a dream!"

Viscosity is a theatrical collective of writers, performers, and visual artists, dedicated to creating original, dynamic experiences for a new generation of theatre goers. The Company was conceptualized in Missoula, MT in 2009 with Salep and Silk, the first original collaboration between Director Rebecca Schaffer and Writer Josh Wagner. Viscosity was officially defined in November of 2012 by Schaffer, Wagner, Diego Burgos, and Daniel Scott Morris.
