Small Landowners' Weed Workshop
6:30 PM
FVCC
Description:
The Flathead Conservation District invites small landowners to a weed workshop at Flathead Valley Community College March 4 and 11. Designed for local community members who own five to 50 acres of land, the event will feature various stations that will provide participants a general overview of weed management basics.

Participants will rotate through three 25-minute stations presented by weed experts each evening. On March 4, workshop goers will hear from presenters Dawn Lafleur, with Glacier National Park, who will provide helpful tips on weed identification; Kima Caddell, with the Montana Department of Agriculture, who will teach the basics of plant physiology; and Tris Hoffman, with the United States Forest Service, who will cover weed management tools, including non-chemical control options. Participants will have a chance to win a variety of publications, such as Invasive Plants of the Crown of the Continent, Why Should You Care About Invasive Weeds? and the Weed Seedling Identification Guide, donated by Glacier National Park, United States Forest Service and Montana State University Extension.

March 11 presenters will include Caddell, who will teach the basics of reading complex chemical labels; Steve Robinson, with the Flathead County Weed Department, who will explain the importance of equipment calibration and weed law enforcement; and Andy Lybec, with CHS, who will discuss the proper way to use personal protective equipment when handling chemicals. The Flathead Conservation District, with the funds received from a Flathead Electric Cooperative, Inc. Roundup Safety Grant, and in partnership with CHS, will be giving away 150 pairs of gloves, safety glasses and measuring cups to workshop goers. Participants also will have a chance to win one of eight pairs of rubber boots and one of eight Dupont Tyvek® suits.

All participants will receive a Weed Management Tips handout which contains contact information for all sponsoring natural resource agencies. Participants also will be provided the contact information of workshop presenters as a follow-up resource for addressing questions following the event.

Sponsored by the Flathead Conservation District, FVCC, Montana Department of Agriculture, Flathead Electric Cooperative, Inc. Roundup for Safety, Montana State University Extension, CHS, Glacier National Park, Flathead County Weed Department, United States Forest Service and Daily Inter Lake, the workshops will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the large community room inside Arts & Technology building on the college campus.
