Description:
It’s that time of year again, when NFL athletes and other sport celebrities descend
upon the Flathead Valley to raise money for the children.

March 7th through March 10th is the 28th annual Whitefish Winter Classic. The event brings former college standouts and current NFL stars to town to help raise money for a good cause. All monies go to benefit “For the Children, Inc”, a non-profit charity started by former Montana Grizzly and Miami Dolphin, Doug Betters.

Betters, a Whitefish resident, started For the Children, Inc. to help Northwest Montana families whose children need medical care outside of the area. Every year the organization helps to pick up where insurance leaves off. They assist with travel, food, lodging, and even speciality therapy equipment.

The Whitefish Winter Classic is the only fundraiser for the local charity. It features a weekend of events for all to enjoy. Thursday night, March 7th, kicks off the weekend with the Poker Run in downtown Whitefish. Friday features family fun with Meet the Players at Whitefish Mountain Resort and the Play 60 Challenge sponsored by the Whitefish Credit Union. Saturday night is the main event with the Winter Classic Gala at the Lodge at Whitefish Lake. The weekend winds down on Sunday with a Champagne Brunch at the Whitefish Lake Restaurant.

The NFL celebrities have become a big part the weekend. Over his 10-year career with the Miami Dolphins as a defensive end, Betters became a legend as a member of the Killer B’s defense. He made two Superbowl appearances, one Pro Bowl appearance, and was crowned 1983 NFL Defensive Player of the Year. In addition to Betters, the 2013 Whitefish Winter Classic will feature NFL athletes like current
Superbowl participant and perennial Pro Bowler, Haloti Ngata, of the Baltimore Ravens. Also slated to attend are former Montana Grizzly and current Philadelphia Eagle Colt Anderson, current Grizzly head coach, Mick Delaney, and even Griz mascot, Monte.

This year’s Whitefish Winter Classic runs March 7th through the 10th. For details on events or tickets to the Gala, please visit our website at: www.whitefishwinterclassic.org.
