“Disgraced” Description:
WHITEFISH THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS PULITZER-WINNING PLAY "DISGRACED"

As part of the Black Curtain Theatre series, the Whitefish Theatre Company is thrilled to present "Disgraced" written by Ayad Akhtar. Winner of the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and nominee for the 2015 Tony Award for Best Play, this sharp and hard-hitting theatre production will be performed on May 7th and 8th at 7:30 p.m. at the O'Shaughnessy Center in Whitefish.

"Disgraced", described by the Associated Press as "breathtaking, raw and blistering", is the emotionally shattering tale of the stories we tell our friends, the secrets we tell our loved ones, and the lies we tell ourselves to find our place in the American Dream. The story follows Amir Kapoor, a successful Pakistani-American lawyer who is rapidly moving up the corporate ladder while distancing himself from his cultural roots. When Amir and his wife Emily, a white artist influenced by Islamic imagery, host a dinner party, what begins as polite table conversation explodes, leaving everyone's relationships and beliefs about race and identity in shards.

"Playwright Ayad Akhtar has alluded that the title of the play was inspired by the 'disgrace' of public discourse in our time," says Director Nancy Nei. "As clashes of culture, race, and religion continue to make headlines, this important play takes an unflinching look at these issues, particularly at marked Islamophobia that has happened post 9/11. This stellar cast has truly been exploring the characters of "Disgraced" who initially think they have open-minded views on diversity and assimilation, until they hit the bedrock of their own cultural experiences."

Cast members include Corey Burke as Amir, Kim Krueger as Emily, Andrew Matulionis as Isaac, Sarina Hart as Jory, and Chris Fannon, new to the WTC stage, as Abe. Viewers are reminded that as a Black Curtain production, there will minimal staging, no set or props, and actors will be reading from a script. A short talk back is scheduled directly following the show.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students with general seating. Tickets are sold only at the door on the evenings of each show. The Box Office opens at 6:30 p.m. and is located at 1 Central Ave., Whitefish. For more information, call 862-5371. This show is sponsored by Soroptomist International of Whitefish.
