Photographers in Glacier National Park
12:00 PM
the park's community building
Description:
The Crown of the Continent Research Learning Center at Glacier National Park is hosting a brown-bag luncheon presentation by photographer and Glacier National Park Artist-in-Residence Norman Riley. The free presentation, "Photographers in Glacier National Park," is Thursday, July 30, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. at the park's community building in West Glacier.
Riley will lead a discussion about early photographers in Glacier National Park and present selected images by those photographers. He will discuss the role these images have played in attracting people to the park, recording conditions and events throughout the park's history, and contributing to an understanding of the changes that have occurred in Glacier over the last 100 years. Mr. Riley will also speak briefly about his work in photography and about his experience with the artist-in-residence program at Glacier National Park.

Norman Riley is an American photographer working in the f/64 tradition popularized by Ansel Adams. Like Adams, Riley uses old-style large format film cameras to produce highly detailed images in black and white. He has been published here and abroad, and his works are held in the permanent collections of several museums in the United States. He makes his home in Bellingham, WA.

The artist-in-residence program at Glacier National Park offers professional artists an opportunity to pursue their artistic discipline while being surrounded by the park's inspiring landscape. Each artist is able to pursue their work while in the park, and then engage and inspire the public through an outreach program. The public programs will be related to their experience as the artist-in-residence and can be in the form of demonstrations, talks, exploratory walks, or performances. Digital images of selected work produced as a part of the residency may be used in park publications, websites, and presentations for education and outreach.

The Glacier National Park Crown of the Continent Research Learning Center hosts brown-bag lectures throughout the year. Visit http://www.crownscience.org/getinvolved/outreach/brownbag for more information.
