The geologic features one can see along The Highline trail offer stunning glimpses of time in Glacier's history. Our many vantage points provide spectacular views of the classic glacial landscape. Along the hike we will make several stops to examine the billion year old sedimentary rocks, describe the processes of mountain-building and the further action of recent glacial activity. Flora and fauna abound on this trail, and wildlife encounters often upstage any discussion of geology.
This is an active hike. We will hike at a moderate pace between a dozen or more geology stops to discuss the landscape we are viewing. The hike from Logan Pass to Haystack Butte and back to Logan Pass is about 7 miles with 1,000 feet elevation gain and loss.
Solely dedicated to education, the Glacier Institute serves adults and children as an educational leader in the Crown of the Continent ecosystem, emphasizing outreach and field-based learning experiences; the non-profit Institute provides an objective and science-based understanding of the area's ecosystem and it interactions with people. Marking its 31st year of educational programs, the Glacier Institute is a long-time educational partner with Glacier National Park, Flathead National Forest, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, and Flathead Valley Community College. The Institute offers family programs, youth science adventure camps, Discovery School at the Big Creek Outdoor Education Center and adult educational programs. The Institute has never turned away a child who has requested an educational scholarship and has welcomed over 28,000 Flathead Valley elementary school children to its Discovery School three-day immersion learning program at the Big Creek Outdoor Education Center.
We will meet at the Glacier Institute Field Camp at 8:00 AM on Thursday, August 28, 2014. You can register for the "Geology along the Highline" course by calling (406) 755-1211 or through our website at www.glacierinstitute.org. This course is $65.00 per person. Lodging is also available for $32/person per evening. We hope you can join us!
