9:00 AM
Snappy's Sport Senter
Description:
Montana Wilderness Association and Snappy Sport Senter will be sponsoring a class entitled " Reading Map, Compass, Tracks and Sign, " on October 4th at 9am at Snappy's conference room. Topo quad maps will be available for each student at 8 dollars per copy, and Snappy's will have several Silva Ranger compasses on sale. Students are asked to bring a pencil, ruler, and calculator. We will spend about four hours in the classroom laying out routes, learning about maps, and using our compass, and then head to field to practice and learn the basics of animal tracking. Please come prepared for a full day with gear, lunch, and proper footwear. There will be a few compasses to loan to students who may not have one for the day. Space is limited for this free, open to the public outdoor experience so please register early at: www.wildmontana.org/walks or call 406-291-2154.

Please come prepared for a day in the field, with personal gear, proper layering of clothing for weather, good footwear, lunch and water. Our instructor, Brian Baxter, has degrees in both forestry and wildlife management, and supervised forest technicians in remote orienteering for the extensive forest inventory. Baxter is also a land surveyor, and wildlife researcher, with 16 years as an outdoor education instructor. The program will wrap up at approximately 4:30 pm.
