Whitefish Lake Restaurant
Description:
Miss Strideville

Grammy nominated pianist and Steinway Artist Judy Carmichael will perform on stage in the dining room at Whitefish Lake Restaurant on Saturday, November 3rd on a Steinway grand piano. The piano is graciously being loaned by the North Valley Music School. She will be joined by world famous tenor saxophonist Harry Allen, and jazz guitarist Chuck Flory. The excellent restaurant will be offering their full dinner and beverage menu, just like a big city jazz club. The show starts at 8pm. The Judy Carmichael Trio is based in New York City.

The New York Times wrote about Judy Carmichael, Exhilarating positive pianist…flawless technique. She’s a two-fisted pianist who Count Basie nicknamed Stride. George Shearing called her Miss Strideville. That’s because, when it comes to stride pianists, Judy is one of the very best. Her passion for jazz is unbridled, she’s got wit and virtuosity to match and her singing features Peggy Lee inspired standards to humorous takes on Fats Waller tunes.

Judy Carmichael has appeared frequently on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion, and has been featured on National Public Radio’s Morning Edition, Entertainment Tonight and CBS’ Sunday Morning. She’s played in a variety of venues from Carnegie Hall, to programs with Michael Feinstein and The Smothers Brothers. In addition, she’s performed private recitals for famous people like Robert Redford and President Clinton.

Judy Carmichael is also an educator who approaches jazz from a perspective of its entire history. She’s written two books on stride piano and numerous articles on the subject of jazz. Her weekly Public Radio show called Judy Carmichael’s Jazz Inspired has been on the air for twenty years. Her radio show explores the questions How do creative people create? And What inspires the people who inspire you? To learn more, visit her website at http://www.judycarmichael.com.

Tenor saxophonist Harry Allen has over thirty recordings to his name. Three of Harry's CDs have won Gold Disc Awards from Japan's Swing Journal Magazine. He’s appeared at jazz festivals and clubs worldwide and with artists like Rosemary Clooney, Ray Brown and Hank Jones. Harry Allen has been featured on many of John Pizzarelli’s recordings including the soundtrack of the film The Out of Towners starring Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn in which he made a cameo appearance. Martin Richards of Jazz Journal said of Allen, Rich and satisfying when he’s balladeering, mind blowing when he’s cooking. Guitarist Chris Flory has been a fixture on the New York jazz scene since the late ‘70s, touring with Benny Goodman's last ensemble and with one of Scott Hamilton's first groups. During his early career, Flory's great sense of time made him a favorite with jazz greats Roy Eldridge and Hank Jones, and with vocalists Rosemary Clooney and Maxine Sullivan.

Judy is a warm and engaging natural performer. New Orleans pianist Allen Toussaint said of Judy Carmichael At first it’s joyously shocking to hear such chops at work but that observation is soon overwhelmed by the rich heart and soul and high spirit of her music. It’s quite a ride. Don Heckman, reviewing one of Judy’s shows for The International Review of Music wrote: She was as improvisationally inventive with words as she was with her piano. A helluva performance, on all counts. Instrumentally exciting, vocally engaging, musically compelling and marvelously--I’ll say it again--entertaining.

Plan to be marvelously entertained. This concert is sponsored by Don “K” Subaru and brought to you by Singer & Simpson Productions. Thank you to the North Valley Music School, AA Moving and The Lodge at Whitefish Lake. Any proceeds will benefit The Steinway Fund, created by Don “K” Subaru and John Simpson to pay for the recently acquired Steinway concert grand piano at the Whitefish Performing Arts Center.
