Climate Change: The Public Health Challenge of our Time
7:00 PM

Climate Change: The Public Health Challenge of our Time Description:
A warming climate around the world is the greatest public health challenge of our time. But the risk can be reduced by cutting carbon emissions and shifting to renewable energy sources, say two Hardin area doctors who are the featured speakers at a December 3 presentation in Whitefish.

In western Montana, some of the greatest health concerns related to global warming are wildfires and smoke. Wildfires globally, including across the western United States, are expected to become more frequent and with longer fire seasons. Much of that smoke ends up in the intermountain valleys of the Rockies. "Smoke, primarily from wildfires, is especially risky for children and senior citizens," said Dr. Lori Byron. "These impacts of climate change are local and they affect us all personally. We Montanans have a strong incentive to support climate solutions."

What: Free public presentation: Climate Change: The Public Health Challenge of our Time
Who: Drs. Lori and Robert Byron, Physicians from Hardin, Montana
When: Thursday, December 3, 2015 at 7 p.m.
Where: Whitefish Public Library, 9 Spokane Avenue

Dr. Robert Byron, MD, MPH, works as a hospitalist at St. Vincent's Healthcare in Billings and at the Bighorn Valley Health Center in Hardin. He was recently appointed by Governor Steve Bullock to a four-year term on the Board of Environmental Review, a quasi-judicial board responsible for adopting rules regarding the Clean Air Act of Montana, as well as rules affecting water, land use, hazardous waste and other environmental activities. Dr. Lori Byron, MD, is a pediatrician who worked for 27 years on the Crow Reservation and who now works at St. Vincent's Healthcare in Billings. She is an avid outdoors woman and active in the faith community.

In 2014, the Byrons became members of the Climate Reality Leadership Corps after attending training in Brazil. They have led community discussions with public health professionals, church groups, and the general public throughout Montana.
Their presentation is free and open to the public.

Sponsored by Glacier Climate Action, Montana Conservation Voters Education Fund, Montana Environmental Information Center, and National Wildlife Federation.
