A Midsummer Night’s Dream
8:00 PM Bigfork Center for the Performing Arts
Description:
The Northwest Ballet Company will present A Midsummer Night’s Dream on Mother’s Day Weekend, May 9-11, at the Bigfork Center of Performing Arts. Appropriate for all ages, the full length ballet is based on Shakespeare’s romantic comedy and is sure to delight mom and the entire family.
Inspired by Mendelssohn’s music of the same title and the NWB company’s vivacious spirit, Artistic Director Marisa Roth chose to choreograph the entire ballet anew. Her labor of love produced a seamless full length ballet from beginning to end that is finely tailored to the strength of each dancer. The technically demanding ballet also calls on the dramatic talents of the dancers. "Along with 5 local guest artists, our dancers get to explore the theatrical side of being in a story ballet and they are loving every minute of it!" Roth says.
Some characters are quite involved throughout the whole ballet, making rehearsal schedules grueling. Roth is quick to remark that the company’s enthusiasm and dedication remains quite strong, even though some of the dancers are in rehearsal four nights a week. Most notable of characters is Queen Titania, played by Senior Northwest Ballet Company member Brie Webber. Before Brie was with the company, she was invited to perform in smaller roles from time to time. "Our first rehearsal with the entire ‘Midsummer’ cast was very surreal. I used to be one of the little girls looking up to all the company girls in awe. Now, I am the lead and it’s my last production with the company. I am definitely going to miss it and I am very grateful for the opportunity to dance such a beautiful part." Other seniors in important roles are Amber Blodgett as Moth, Lexie Conat as Cobweb, Lindsey Schwickert as Peaseblossom, and Laura Syvertson as Puck.
New to the company’s production is a hand painted canvas backdrop by local artists Linda and David Ensign and new costumes by Costume Mistress, Kendra Freeman.
The Northwest Ballet Company is an elite group of dancers from all over the Flathead Valley. The dancers train at the Northwest Ballet School in Kalispell and must audition for acceptance into the Company. In addition to the varied repertoire of the Mother’s Day shows, the company also performs The Nutcracker annually, a valley favorite.
