Whitefish PTA - Cyberbullying seminar
7:00 PM Whitefish Middle School Auditorium
Description:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Whitefish, Montana…. Does your child surf the net or use a cell phone? If so, you MUST attend this important presentation! A recent poll, commissioned by Fight Crime: Invest in Kids, shows that one in three teens and one in six preteens have been victims of cyber bullying.
The Whitefish PTA is pleased to offer a seminar for families to learn from highly trained professionals how to stop the damaging practice of cyber-bullying
Please join other interested families on October 21 at 7 pm at The Whitefish Middle School Auditorium. You and your children will discover the hazards associated with cyber-bullying from Alison Schmaltz, of the Kalispell School District and Detective Doug Overman of The Kalispell Police Dept. They have been trained in assisting schools with implementing nationally recognized and effective programs to decrease incidents of bullying in the classroom and the community.
All parents should become aware of how to help protect their children from Internet and cell phone misuse. It may seem like a minor threat to some, but cyber-bullying can be more dangerous than in-person confrontations for the following reasons:
• It can be more difficult to stop an online bully.
• Emotional violence can be more damaging than physical violence.
• Cyber-bullying can have long term effects as gossip, lies, photos and videos stay long after bruises fade.
• Cyber-bullying follows people into the home, which would normally be considered a safe haven from this type of activity.
• It is easy to impersonate another person online, gain someone’s trust and then turn on them.
By attending this seminar, you and your children will find out how to avoid being a victim! We encourage you to bring your children, as it will be helpful for them to hear first hand how to prevent cyber-bullying.
And, if you signed up to be a PTA member this year, you may be the lucky recipient of the awesome Felt cruiser give-away prize, to be drawn that evening!
