Penguin Plunge
12:30 PM    Whitefish Lake

Description:
February 2, 2008 marks the 10th annual Penguin Plunge in Whitefish to help raise funds for the Special Olympics teams in Montana. Over the past ten years an average of 125 people plunge into the icy cold waters of Whitefish Lake to raise money for training children and adults for Special Olympics events. The Penguin Plunge in Whitefish was the very first organized plunge to raise money for the Special Olympics. Last year they were able to raise $30,000. Currently, there are eight separate organized plunges yearly throughout the state. Combined these popular fundraisers raised $150,000 in 2007 for Special Olympics Montana. Those who benefit from the Penguin Plunge are local and statewide children and adults with intellectual disabilities and closely related developmental disabilities. Fifty percent of the Montana Special Olympics athletes are school age children. The remaining fifty percent are made up of adults from group homes, sheltered work shops, day activity centers and independent living facilities. The annual Penguin Plunge is one of the many fundraisers under the umbrella of The Law Enforcement Torch Run organized and run by local law enforcement. The Torch Run began in Kansas City in 1981 and is now active in over 35 countries in the world making it the largest grass roots fundraiser and public awareness vehicle for the Special Olympics. Big Mountain Ski resort will be hosting this years Special Olympic Montana winter events. 300 athletes and 110 coaches from over 20 teams will gather at Whitefish Mountain Resort to compete in three different sports over a three-day period. Competitions will include Alpine Skiing, Cross Country Skiing, Snowshoeing and Beginner Alpine Snowboarding.
