Sustaining Water Quality Through Land Use Planning
9:00 AM    Red Lion Inn

Description:
A two-day workshop, Sustaining Water Quality Through Land Use Planning: Exploring the Possibilities, will be held February 8 and 9 from 9a.m.– to 4 p.m. at the Red Lion Inn, Kalispell.

The workshop will focus on strategies to help ensure that the pattern and character of development in the Flathead watershed will better protect water quality.  It will also explore ways that a planning process can enhance public participation and trust through policy development and coordination.

Tim Hagan, Water Quality Specialist with the Lake Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, will be a featured presenter at the workshop along with local water quality experts. Lake Tahoe is a magnificent body of water, and like Flathead Lake, it is threatened by declining water quality. The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, created in 1969 by the U.S. Congress, serves planning areas around the lake in both California and Nevada. The agency is charged with protecting Lake Tahoe and its water quality as a national treasure for the benefit of current and future generations.

In 1987, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency adopted a plan to implement this vision, and its staff is currently in the process of revising the plan. Mr. Hagan, as one of the lead water quality specialists and planners guiding the plan’s revision, looks forward to sharing lessons they have learned from the past twenty years as well as insights about how the process has led to more collaborative management, incentives, and shared solutions.

The workshop is open to the public and will include opportunities for interactive discussions on a variety of land use planning related water quality topics with experts in this field. Registration and a complete agenda are available online at http://www.flatheadcitizens.org/alerts.htm or by calling 756-8993.

The fee for the workshop is $15.00 per day with lunch and $10.00 per day without lunch.
