Historic Film Club screens drama "Downhill Racer"
7:00 PM
The Museum at Central School
Historic Film Club screens drama Description:
Despite his arrogance, downhill skier David Chappellet (Robert Redford) is one of the United States’ best bets for Olympic gold. Because of his natural talent, Chappallet becomes a fan-favorite, even though his selfish nature has him clashing with those around him, including USA coach Eugene Claire (Gene Hackman). Even if Chappellet achieves his victory, he will find himself winning in the same manner that he lived his life - alone.
The Olympic setting of this film is a perfect kick-off to the 2018 Winter Olympics in February. Redford's performance as David Chappellet drew inspiration from three different American skiers: 1964 Olympic silver medal winner Billy Kidd (who was known as arrogant), Spider Sabich from California (who had tense relationships with his coaches), and Buddy Werner of Steamboat Springs (a reckless skier who died in an avalanche before the 1964 games).
There is no charge for the film, and donations will be accepted to help defray the cost of acquiring and showing the films. The movie and popcorn are free; wine, beer, pop and water will be for sale. Seating is provided, but film fans can bring their own floor pillows, portable chairs, or whatever is comfortable for viewing the film.
