Winter Wildlife Tracking
10:00 AM
Swan Valley Connections
Winter Wildlife Tracking Description:
Enhance your ability to observe and correctly interpret the subtle signs that our elusive wildlife species leave behind. Participants will learn how to recognize animals by track, scat, feeding behavior, gait pattern, habitat selection, marking behavior, and other sign in the winter landscape.

You will learn how to read tracks and sign to determine the movements and behaviors of animals in the Swan Valley. Start with an informational lecture and overview of techniques at the Beck Homestead in Condon. The rest of the day will be spent in the field putting those techniques into practice. You will become familiar with gait patterns and how to measure the stride (length) and straddle (width) between tracks. Hone your eyes to subtle clues with the help of experienced guides. This area contains the full suite of North American carnivores from wolves to lynx to wolverines. Rich in wildlife, the Swan Valley is an incredible location to spend the day tracking.

REGISTRATION REQUIRED.
10:00am – 4:00pm. The group will be in the classroom 10:00am – 11:30am, then enjoy lunch provided by SVC, and get out into the field 12:00pm – 4:00pm
