Free Concert by Flathead Valley Band & Navy Band NW
7:30 PM
Flathead High School Auditorium
The Flathead Valley Community Band is teaming up with the Navy Band of the Northwest to present an evening of band music on Wednesday March 22, 2017, in the Flathead High School Auditorium (644 4th Ave W, Kalispell). The program begins at 7:30. Lieutenant Bruce Mansfield directs navy Band Northwest, and the Flathead Valley Community Band is under the direction of Allen Slater.

The first half of the concert will be the Flathead Valley community band. This group consists of musicians from all walks of life that live in and around the Flathead valley. They perform in several venues during the year including concerts in Depot park, Riverbend series in Bigfork, Marantette Park in Columbia Falls, several retirement homes and local parades including 4th of July Bigfork and Northwest Fair parade in Kalispell. They also perform more formal inside concerts for the community throughout the year.

The Navy Band Northwest will perform the second half of the concert. Their mission includes community outreach performances for the Pacific Northwest. The group performs in Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Northern California, Nevada, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, Western Nebraska, and Western Kansas. The group of 35 appears as a large ensemble for parades and ceremonies, but can also split into small ensembles to provide a number of musical varieties varying from classical and contemporary chamber music, to jazz and rock 'n' roll. The concert opens with music from the grand opera The Queen of Sheba by Charles Gounod. This grand entrance music will open this high energy concert. The first half includes Alfred Reed's First Suite for band, a collection of four diverse and interesting musical vignettes simply labelled as March, Melody, Rag and Gallop. And as always the community band has several great American marches sure to set you toe to tapping.

The concert will feature Navy band soloist PO3 Patrick Melvin playing the first movement of the Concertino for Tuba by Rolf Wilhelm. This piece was written for Robert Tucci, principal tuba of the Bavarian State Opera/Munich Philharmonic, and was premiered in 1983 at the International Euphonium & Tuba Conference at the Univ. of Maryland by Mr. Tucci and the USAF Band, Col. Arnald Gabriel, conducting. It is a virtuoso masterpiece challenging the performer to play technically and musically throughout the range of the instrument.
The second half will be entirely comprised of music performed by the Navy Band Northwest. They plan to have a number of their small groups play in addition to the full ensemble. This promises to be a fantastic evening of fine music.

There is no admittance charge for the concert but there will be a free will donation.
