Sacred Concepts of Worship
8:30 AM
Glacier Institute
Description:
Cost: $65

Although there are hundreds of cultures and traditions within the Native American communities, they all share common concepts at the root of their sacred ways and practices. The following concepts will facilitate appreciation and understanding of sacred traditional practices and observances in the lives of Native Americans, individually and collectively.

Traditional sacred ways were and are never unchanging. One of the characteristics of Native American sacred ways is their viability or adaptability. Traditions and customs are altered as necessary given the changing conditions or requirements of the community. Nevertheless, it is important to remember that the knowledge at the core of most traditional beliefs and practices remains virtually unchanged since the beginning of Native American’s existence. At the core of these sacred traditional beliefs and practices is the “respect” of other people’s ways of worship and unseen powers. (Peggy V. Beck, 1992)
