Description:
Improve Lives Through Literacy—Become a Literacy Volunteer

Hundreds of people in the Flathead struggle with reading: they can’t read their child’s report card, a prescription label or a basic map. When you help someone learn to read and write, you build a bridge to a better life. Literacy Volunteers of Flathead County provides free, confidential tutoring to adults and families who struggle with reading, writing and languageskills. We work one-on-one with learners and need new tutors and volunteers to keep up with the increased demand for our services!

We also have a variety of volunteer opportunities that utilize a wide range of talents (from fundraising to art and book sorting to office work) and don’t require tutor training.

Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language tutors work one-on-one with
learners—and we tailor sessions to your schedule. Literacy Volunteers provides the materials, the meeting place and the support—tutors provide the hope and help for a better life. Tutors and volunteers are needed throughout the valley in Kalispell, Whitefish, Columbia Falls, Eureka, Lakeside and Bigfork. The ability to read or speak English can change lives—for adults and their families.

Interested tutors and volunteers can attend our Open House at our main office in Kalispell on Monday, Sept. 24 from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. and Wednesday, Oct. 3 from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. at our office at the Gateway Community Mall (1201 Hwy 2 West, on the north end of the mall where the Flathead Food Bank is located.) Tour our new space at the Gateway Community Mall and learn about all the ways that you can literacy in the Flathead.

Basic Literacy and ESL (English as a Second Language) tutors must attend our tutor training course before they can be assigned a learner; but volunteers can start right away. Our first formal training is on Saturday, Oct. 13, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. for all interested tutors—we do require that new volunteers and tutors attend an orientation session as well. Please call our office at 257-7323 if you have any questions or need to make other arrangements.
